Kirsten Jones - Shoes

Originally inspired by the story of the twelve dancing princesses, my love of collected objects is epitomized in the shoes series; the ultimate collection.

Shoes are worn throughout life and carry the scuffs, scrapes, wear and tear as we go. A pair of shoes are a reminder of an event or a time in life, evocative and intensely personal.

My shoe paintings are often created as portraits of the owners or a reference to a place or event, perhaps where the shoes were bought or worn. Carefully chosen text, images, maps and fragments of paper are collaged onto the surface before painting begins. Each pair of shoes tells a story, whether real or imagined...sometimes secret, obvious only to the owner of the shoes.
